Mention Wembley and only one thing now comes to mind, Wembley Stadium, home of the F A Cup and other sporting events and concerts. It is an area of north west London in the Borough of Brent, but back in the middle of the 19th century its residents enjoyed a more rural lifestyle. Indeed, in 1547 there were only 6 houses in Wembley. Wembley combined forces with nearby Harrow to stage a steeplechase meeting on Monday 31st January 1848 on a course barely a mile from Wembley and 3 miles from Harrow. The course began and ended on Mr J Elmore’s farm, moving westward across grassland before facing 2 leaps and the only water jump. The opening Sweepstakes was won by Mr T Westley’s Abraham Parker, beating The Kitten and Jack O’Lantern. The feature Steeplechase was won by The Crab owned, appropriately enough, by Mr Elmore. Although Harrow later combined forces with Kenton and Uxendon, this was the only meeting held in Wembley. |
